Magento2 is coming up with many new features and is being build on the latest technology stack like PHP 5.4 and 5.5, HTML5, CSS3, jQuery and {less}. There are many changes in the layout, database structure is changes, there is an Improved SOAP, XML-RPC, JSON-RPC, REST and other APIs used. Magento 2 is now using a RequireJS library. It helps load JS resources asynchronously. As a result you get improved page load time and encourage modular design for front end components.

All these features and enhancement are adding up to the possibility that Magento 2 architecture will be so different from the previous version that there will be no sense in such migration. However, the Magento team says that it will provide developers with some tools to simplify the process of upgrade but this in most case will not solve the problem due to heavy customisation in each stores and their data. Same goes with Magento Extensions and Modules. Due to heavy changes in the layout and the use of latest technology stack, the extensions will not have an automatic transition from Magento 1 to Magent 2, thus increasing the need of the developers to understand the latest development more and update themselves accordingly.

The upgrade at current stage seems least likely. But we still have a stable version to come. The Magento team is planning to support Magento 1 for 3 years from the moment of the Magento 2 release so lets wait and see how it goes.
