As Envision Ecommerce has promised to keep you updated with the latest information on Magento 2, today we would like to share with you our new research activity on how to change the URL of Magento 2 admin, from “Autogenerated URL key” to your own URL key.

There are 2-3 simple & easy steps involved in this:

Step 1: env.php

Go to env.php located at: magento2\app\etc

Step2:  line #4, change autosetstring” to “myadmin”

In line #4, you need to replace “autosetstring” with “myadmin”.

For example:

In line #4, change 'frontName' => 'autosetstring' to  'frontName' => 'myadmin'
So, now your new admin URL will be: www.yoursite.com/index.php/myadmin

We hope that aforementioned steps work fine for you. We will keep posting & update you regarding any new experiments & advancements in Magento 2. We welcome your feedbacks and also appreciate any other idea that suits best in this case.

Should I use a rel canonical or a 301 redirect to move content to a separate site over to my main domain?

After solving the question regarding subdomain vs. subfolders in our previous blog post, we are going to describe the next-up experiment of MOZ on rel=canonical vs. 301s. If you are one of those who get stuck in this question – “Should I use a rel=canonical or a 301 redirect to move content to a separate site over to my main domain?”, you will feel pretty comfortable with your preferred choice after reading this blog post.

While considering 301 redirect, other site’s page “example.com/a “ can redirect to your site page example.com/a, and anyone (whether he is a visitor or search engine) who sends a request for the old page, gets the new page. On the other hand, if you apply rel=canonical to your website’s one page, and a visitor requests the old page,it will still allow him to access the old page. In terms of search engine’s preference over the both webpages, it will get the new version of the page (a page with rel=canonical), or it’ll fundamentallyconsiderthese both pages to be one and the same.

When it comes to the ranking factor of search engine, in both of these cases, rel=canonical helps you to retainthe branding or some unique aspect of something that occurs around your webpages, and it will still allow your visitors to go to that page, butthe search engines will prefer to rank the page with rel=canonical over your both pages (old one & new copied version of that one). Moreover, it is a great utilize for the cross-domain rel=canonical.

As per Digital Marketing Treands, we would like to recommend you to choose the one which is best for your users and what you wish them to still get. Your first priority should be your users & then consider search engines and what content you wish them to index, pass authority and link juice.

Should I Put My Blog Content on a Subdomain or in a Subfolder?

Should I put my blog content on a subdomain or in a subfolder – is a very genuine & common question that resides in everyone’s mind before starting up a new blog.

To put blog content, which is better, a Subdomain or Subfolder, from an SEO prospective. This is definitely one of the much discussed debates on MOZ. In this blog post, we are going to discuss MOZ’s (World’s largest community of SEOs) such debate & experiments about Subdomains vs. Subfolders. There are some statements from Googlers, like Matt Cutts & John Mueller that come into sight as the reasons behind this discussion or debate. For example, a statement from John Mueller-“Hey, Google has gotten much better at identifying and associating content that’s on a subdomain with the main domain, and you don’t need to worry about placing content on two separate subdomains anymore.”

While making a choice between subdomain (for example: blog.yoursite.com) and subfolder (for example: www.yoursite.com/blog) to put your content, subfolder is better to go with from an SEO perspective. However, subdomains may require a lot less technical operations or obstacles and engineering or development staff, but engines may consider the content on this separate subdomain in a different way. On the other hand, if you put all your content on a single subroot domain or we can say the subfolder, it will benefit all other content on the website.

MOZ has actually done this experiment many times for them. They first put content on a subdomain and then moved it over to a subfolder, and noticed a significant boost in rankings as well as search traffic. One more pretty clear evidence by MOZ (totally opposite to above mentioned move), like TImo Reitnauer’s iwantmyname blog, in which he had moved his content from the main domain over to a subdomain and noticed a big drop in search traffic. This drop is still hasn’t been recovered since 5 or 6 months. So, the SEO in our SEO experts still recommends you to keep your content on a single subroot domain, preferably in subfolders.

As per technical SEO things, subfolders are likely better for acquiring link equity and other SEO factors.

The Rise of PHP 7, Most Important Shift in LAMP Stack

PHP 7 features a new engine known as “phpng”to vie with other interpreters like hhvm (utilized by Facebook). The new engine makes a change in the way the language works with memory consumption, data types and data structures. This new major release is equipped with a more optimized core engine for CPU & memory as compared to PHP 5.6.

Everyone around the development corner was expecting the release of PHP 6, not of PHP 7. The reason why PHP 6 was dropped is because of unicodeproblems & various other complications in version 6. Thus, the team decided to put a stop over version 6 and a move towards next version PHP 7 was made.

PHP 7 Adoption Status in Popular CMS

All the popular CMS understand the important of PHP 7 and have already started to adopt to it. Following are some of those CMS which already claim to have their codes compatible with PHP 7

  • Drupal 8 – Officially supports PHP 7. It is already available for download.
  • Drupal 7 – Works with PHP 7. It is already available for download.
  • WordPress 4.3.1 – Works with PHP 7. It is already available for download.
  • Joomla! 3.5 – Supports PHP 7. Will be released in January 2016.

PHP 7 is a popular programming language based on the abstract syntax tree and it supports developers in building add-on tools or executing profiling or static analysis. The new PHP 7 versionsupports anonymous classes, return type, scalar type declarations and forces developers to remove unsupported Server APIs or extensions that they were using previously. That is why Envision Ecommerce suggests to first test this version on a staging environment prior to enabling it on your live website.
