WooCommerce VS Magento — WooCommerce leading the race

We at Envision Ecommerce are always focused to come up with latest trends and news. Recently when the company behind WordPress (Automattic) acquired WooCommerce (Build by WooThemes), we were both excited and keen to see in depth the reason behind it. Upon analysis we got to know the real reason, it is a start of a very new era and opportunity for people who want to have their Ecommerce store at low cost. WordPress currently powers around 23% website on internet and they are striving to reach their goal of 51% which can be possible with such acquires.

We are a team of Magento Certified Professionals and for us Magento is and always be the best Ecommerce Platform. We also have deep expertise in WooCommerce and we work a lot on it too. So we thought to check out who is currently leading the race. We did some research and the results even took us by surprise. It is “WooCommerce” that is leading the number of stores that it powers compared to Magento.

No doubt that Magento is one of the most advanced Ecommerce platform that is very robust and formidable but WooCommerce has taken a lead with its ease to use and lesser development cost. Also the easy integration with WordPress makes it more accessible and user friendly. Magento, still have its own class with Enterprise version and premium client but WooCommerce with its ease have beaten Magento in the race very quickly.

Yes, we know that these facts and figures are not exactly correct (we cannot claim it to be as they are researched over internet) but they gives us a clear indication of how the trend is evolving. The increasing presence of WooCommerce is an encouraging fact for Ecommerce industry and for people looking for low cost Ecommerce solution. The merger with WordPress (Automattic) also gives a future prospect of possible hosted online Ecommerce solution by them just like Shopify and Bigcommerce.

Magento has its own class and it should not be much worried about these facts but yes it can certainly lose its ground in future due to the ease and flexibility that WooCommerce provide.

WordPress acquires WooCommerce, a perfect marriage for Ecommerce Industry

Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, announced on 19th May that it is acquiring the team and company behind the popular WooCommerce WordPress plugin. WooCommerce is a very popular and highly used WordPress plugin that allows a WordPress based website to turn into an Online Ecommerce store.

Since it’s launch in 2011 by WooThemes, WooCommerce has turned out to be a dominant force in Ecommerce Domain. The Company Automattic is now ten years old company and has some serious future and potential ahead with the kind of portfolio they carry.

Automattic

WordPress and the company behind it(Automattic) has always envisioned to power the highest number of website on web and with this acquisition, they might reach this aim. Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic claimed this to be an another step for wordpress to do so. WordPress has many plan around this acquisition. They want the users to be able to start their own store as easily as they their website and blog currently. He said that they will aim to make WooCommerce installation and usage as easy as Wordpres. The WooCommerce company’s figure being closed to eight figures(most of it coming from plugin, theme and services) make it a profitable buy for Automattic.

With this acquisition, WordPress also aims to target its competitor like Squarespace which already provide store front solution with Shopify and Bigcommerce. The main focus for WordPress after this acquisition is to make WooCommerce more flexible, easy to install and manage.

We at Envision Ecommerce see this as a great future ahead. With our expertise in both WordPress and WooCommerce, we feel that we can help you understand this marriage much better and leverage most out of it. Contact us to know how we can help you setup your WooCommerce Store flawlessly and help you grow your Ecommerce Business at minimum cost.

WooCommerce Object Injection Vulnerability

WordPress has been vulnerable to some serious vulnerability recently. Last month we did a blog “Security Vulnerability :: Widespread XSS Vulnerability in WordPress Plugins and Themes” which shared the high risk vulnerability that WordPress and its associated plugin have.

Sucuri, the well know company for Security analysis and fix, has yet again raised alarm for another Object Injection Vulnerability. This time it is WooCommerce’s security vulnerability which can be used by a hacker to get server access and download any file on the infected server.  The hacking is easy in this case and the hacker can remotely trigger it. WooCommerce is the premium plugin that converts your WordPress into an ecommerce platform and to have such vulnerability in it puts your ecommerce portal at high risk.

It is not just the latest version of WooCommerce that is infected but the vulnerability is traced back to version 2.0.20, so all the version after that are at risk. The silver lining here is that the vulnerability is only observed when WooCommerce’s “PayPal Identity Token” option is set as yes (which is in most of the store that use Paypal as a payment method).

We know that WooCommerce is a very important plugin for WordPress based Store owners. As a team dedicated to WooCommerce we share this blog and hope it reaches maximum people so that you can update your WooCommerce  Store ASAP. We are available for any help and support in case if you need us to do it for you.

Contact us with your store details and we will certainly assist you to secure your WooCommerce Store.
